Beautiful, mesmerising & sumptuous all the way through, Charulata marks another creative high for Satyajit Ray, for it presents the legendary Bengali filmmaker at the apex of his talents and is arguably the most polished & sophisticated film of his rich & revered career. Bhupati Dutta (Sailen Mukherjee), a wealthy intellectual edits and publishes a political weekly in English called ‘The Sentinel.’ His sensitive and beautiful young wife, Charu (Madhabi Mukherjee), spends her time doing needlework and reading Bengali novels. Based on Tagore's novella 'Nastanirh', which itself was based on Tagore's own attraction to his brother's wife, 'Charulata' tells the tale of the growing attraction between a cousin (Amal, played by Soumitra Chatterjee) who visits a newspaper publisher (Shailen Mukherjee), and the publisher's wife, Charulata (Madhabi Mukherjee). There is no adultery as such - the betrayal is all in the mind - but the trust implicit in marriage is broken, and the future can only be faced with uncertainty. It’s a real upper! Set in India in the last century, Charulata is trapped in a dull, stifling marriage. His paper’s logo being, “The Truth Is What Survives.” He takes pride in his Anglican witticisms and the fact that he is not one of those idle rich, but is working hard and doing something that is important. An inventive bit of photography is used by Ray, undoubtedly influenced by the French New Wave cinema, where we see Charu’s mind in a vortex of activity recalling her past experiences in the village she was brought up in. At Bhupati’s suggestion, the literary minded Amal helps and encourages Charu with her writing. His elder brother Jyotindranath, a playwright, painter and failed businessman, found too little time for his wife Kadambari, who was Rabindranath's age, childless, and infatuated with literature - a very unusual combination for a Bengali woman in that age. Bhupati, busy with the magazine as usual, is unaware of this development. I think Tagore wrote the story with a slight autobiographical connotation where he identified himself as a young struggling writer Amal in the shadow of Bankim Chandra who was an established writer when Tagore was still unknown.

Though the relationship between Amal and Charu is an illicit one according to society norms, what makes it work and strike a chord in the heart of the viewer is their lack of conscious knowledge of what is happening to them and thus this gives them a certain nobility of innocence. What starts off as innocent flirting with her brother-in-law soon sets off emotions that none of them, decent though they all are, can really control. The film boasts of some of Ray’s most cinematic sequences and the music sets the tone of the film with remarkable use of musical motifs.
At one point of the film his face turns to glee as he is in his newspaper’s press room and he exclaims that he just loves the smell of the ink press, there is nothing better in the world than that smell. I haven't seen it since, but thanks to the Criterion Collection, it can now be viewed in beautiful high definition. Her portrayal is very relatable as the story of every bored housewife who is talented but undermined. It allows Charu a chance to realize for the first time in her life what love for someone else feels like as it churns inside her, quite unexpectedly, while being with Amal.

In spite of being a highly educated woman, Chaiti has nothing to do and she spends her time with expensive saris, filing nails, watching TV. Bhupati narrates this to Amal, the only one he feels he can trust. In her reconciliation with her husband there is no sense of guilt, only a recognition of reality. Directed by Satyajit Ray. Ray, at his peak, gave us his most convincing insight into love and loyalty, two of his universal themes. That is a great shame, since this is obviously a great masterpiece. She is trapped by tradition, enclosed within the shuttered rooms of her husband’s house, apparently acquiescent in her role of the compliant wife who wants nothing from life but her husband’s happiness. The subject matter of the film is highly psychological and very personal to the characters. I wanted to like this movie. Charulata's husband is a very rich man, a liberal intellectual and the editor of a journal "The Sentinel", dedicated to the "propagation of the truth". There are some nice moments with Amal singing to Charulata, as well as a fantastic scene with her swinging while he lays in the grass beside her. Amal, his brother, comes for a visit and after a while Bhupati coaxes him to 'bring out' Charulata’s artistic leaning. Add the first question. However, Charulata has been criticised often to be slow in its pace.
The two get more and more drawn to each other. The latter is interested in romantic Bengali literature, not politics. Tagore's personal attachment towards his elder brother's wife and the very important role of his elder brother in his life also seem to echo through this story.
